What is PDLC Film?

PDLC stands for Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal. It's a thin electroactive interlayer sandwiched between glass or applied as a self-adhesive film directly to existing glass surfaces.

In its off state, the liquid crystals inside are randomly scattered — scattering light and making the glass appear milky and opaque, providing complete visual privacy.

When low-voltage electricity is applied, the crystals instantly align in parallel — allowing light to pass through freely, making the glass crystal clear in just 50 milliseconds.

OFF State

Glass is opaque & private.
No power consumed.

ON State

Glass is crystal clear.
Full transparency.

The History and Evolution of PDLC Smart Film that applies to any glass creating Smart Glass.

PDLC Smart Film

PDLC smart film, also known as switchable smart film, privacy smart film, electric privacy film, and smart glass film, has become one of the most important innovations in modern glass technology. What began as a laboratory discovery has developed into a practical architectural solution used in homes, offices, hospitals, hotels, retail stores, conference rooms, glass partitions, bathroom windows, storefronts, and commercial interiors. Today, PDLC smart film is one of the leading technologies used to make smart glass, privacy glass, switchable glass, and electric glass panels.

PDLC stands for Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal. This smart film technology works by placing liquid crystal molecules inside a polymer layer. When the power is off, the liquid crystals are randomly positioned, causing light to scatter. This creates a frosted privacy glass effect. When electricity is applied, the liquid crystals align, allowing light to pass through and making the glass appear clear. This simple on-and-off transformation is what makes PDLC smart film such a powerful privacy solution.
The earliest versions of PDLC film were impressive but limited.

Early smart film could switch from opaque to transparent, but the clear state was often cloudy, the haze level was higher, and the film did not always have the clean optical appearance customers expect today. These first-generation PDLC films proved that switchable privacy glass was possible, but they were not yet ideal for high-end architectural glass, luxury residential projects, or professional commercial glass installations.

Over time, the quality of PDLC smart film improved dramatically. Better liquid crystal formulas, improved polymer chemistry, advanced coating methods, stronger adhesives, cleaner busbar systems, and improved manufacturing controls helped create clearer, more reliable, and longer-lasting smart film. These improvements allowed PDLC technology to move from experimental switchable film into premium smart glass applications.

One of the most important improvements in PDLC smart film has been optical clarity. In lower-quality smart film, the glass may look milky, hazy, bluish, or uneven when powered on. In premium PDLC smart film, the clear state is much cleaner, more neutral, and more consistent. High-quality smart film provides a better view through the glass while still offering strong privacy when the film is off. This balance between transparency and privacy is one of the key performance factors in modern smart glass technology.

Generic Grade

There are several quality levels in the PDLC smart film market. Entry-level (Generic Grade) PDLC film is usually the lowest-cost option. It may switch from frosted to clear, but it often has higher haze, weaker adhesive, uneven color, shorter lifespan, and less reliable electrical performance. This type of film may be suitable for temporary or low-budget projects, but it is not always the best choice for professional smart glass installations. These generic options have limited UV Protection, No Etl or UL certification and not National Electrical Code Compliant. There inferior self adhesive backings are prone to fail in sun exposure and trap in heat in high UV areas possibly causing solar fracturing.

Builders Grade

Standard commercial- Builder grade PDLC smart film offers better performance and is commonly used for interior glass privacy applications. It can work well for office glass walls, meeting rooms, interior windows, glass doors, and privacy partitions. However, standard-grade smart film may still have more haze, less durability, or fewer advanced features than premium architectural-grade PDLC smart film.
Smart Film manufactured in the USA caries a serial number with ETL certification on it certifying its authenticity. Look for the Seal Located on the electrical bus bar connections. Genuine Smart Film® was pioneered and Certified by the premium USA Manufacturer Smart Tint Inc. and Available at SmartTint.com. Contact info@smarttint.com with any questions

Premium Architectural Grade

Premium Architectural Grade PDLC smart film aka Smart Tint® and is designed for customers who want the best smart glass performance. Genuine Smart Tint® has a patented Smart Cling® Self Adhesive Technology Premium Peel and Stick backing that naturally out gasses on its own preventing any of the solar fracking issues commonly found in the non-certified generic brands.
Genuine Smart Tint is the industry leader choice of Architect, Designers, and Premium builders who require the best performance, longevity and safety for their clients. Schools, Government Institutions, High Profile Glass areas, Curtain Wall systems, any exterior facing glass applications require this Genuine Smart Tint® for their ETL Certification, UL Compliance, USA Manufacture and National Electric Code Compliance. Smart Tint switchable smart film offers better clarity, stronger privacy, smoother switching, more consistent color, better adhesive quality, improved UV resistance, better heat resistance, and longer service life. This type of smart film is often used for luxury homes, commercial offices, medical facilities, hotels, conference rooms, retail displays, and high-end glass projects where appearance and reliability matter.

The difference between low-quality smart film and high-quality smart film becomes especially clear after installation. Poor-quality film may show bubbles, haze, edge failure, yellowing, delamination, uneven switching, weak privacy, or visible electrical defects. High-quality PDLC smart film is engineered to provide a cleaner finish, stronger bond to the glass, better long-term stability, and a more professional smart glass appearance.

Adhesive quality is another major factor in smart film performance. Self-adhesive smart film must bond smoothly to existing glass. A weak or low-grade adhesive can lead to peeling, bubbling, cloudiness, or installation problems. Premium self-adhesive PDLC film uses better adhesive technology to help create a cleaner installation and longer-lasting privacy glass system.

Electrical performance has also improved over time. Modern PDLC smart film is designed for faster switching, safer operation, and more reliable power control. With the right transformer, wiring, and installation process, smart film can be controlled by a wall switch, remote control, dimmer, smart home system, automation system, or voice control device. This makes switchable smart glass a flexible solution for both residential and commercial spaces.

Another major improvement is durability. Earlier PDLC smart films were more sensitive to heat, UV exposure, moisture, and edge damage. Today’s higher-quality smart films are built with better protective layers, improved materials, and more stable construction. This helps the film resist yellowing, shrinking, cracking, and performance loss over time. For professional smart glass projects, durability is just as important as appearance.

PDLC smart film is now used in many different smart glass applications. In offices, it creates instant privacy for conference rooms, executive offices, and glass walls. In homes, it is used for bathroom windows, bedroom glass, sliding doors, skylights, and open-concept spaces. In hospitals and clinics, smart glass film provides privacy without curtains or blinds. In hotels, it adds a modern luxury feature to bathrooms, suites, and interior partitions. In retail stores, switchable film can turn storefront glass into a projection screen or privacy display.

One reason PDLC smart film is so popular is that it can often be applied to existing glass. Instead of replacing glass with laminated smart glass, self-adhesive smart film can be installed directly onto the surface of current windows or glass panels. This makes it a cost-effective way to upgrade regular glass into smart glass. For many customers, smart film is the easiest way to create electric privacy glass without a full glass replacement.

PDLC smart film also helps reduce the need for blinds, curtains, and shades. Traditional window coverings collect dust, block natural light, and can make a space feel closed off. Smart film allows glass to remain open and modern while still providing privacy on demand. With the press of a button, clear glass becomes frosted privacy glass. With another press, the glass becomes transparent again.
The history of PDLC smart film is really the story of smart glass becoming more practical, attractive, and accessible. Early PDLC technology introduced the idea of switchable privacy. Later generations improved clarity, consistency, adhesive strength, electrical reliability, and durability. Today, premium PDLC smart film offers a professional solution for modern glass design, privacy control, and architectural innovation.
As the smart glass industry continues to grow, PDLC smart film will keep improving. Future improvements will likely focus on lower haze, better transparency, stronger outdoor performance, larger roll sizes, improved energy efficiency, smarter controls, better dimming options, and longer product life. The demand for switchable glass, privacy glass, smart windows, electric glass, and intelligent building materials continues to increase.

PDLC smart film has come a long way from its early experimental stage. It is now a proven smart glass technology used around the world. Whether it is called smart film, PDLC film, switchable film, privacy film, electric film, smart tint film, or smart glass film, the purpose remains the same: to give people instant control over privacy, light, and glass transparency.

The quality of PDLC smart film matters. A basic film may switch on and off, but premium smart film delivers better clarity, better privacy, better durability, and a better finished appearance. For anyone looking to make smart glass, upgrade existing glass, or create modern privacy glass, high-quality PDLC smart film is one of the most effective and versatile solutions available today.

Common Questions

PDLC Film FAQ

Everything you need to know about PDLC glass technology.

PDLC stands for Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal. It describes the core technology inside the film: liquid crystals suspended in a polymer matrix that respond to electrical voltage by changing their orientation, and therefore the optical properties of the glass.
Frosted glass is permanently translucent — you get privacy but never transparency. PDLC film is dynamic: it switches between fully opaque (off, privacy mode) and crystal clear (on, transparent mode) on command. It can be controlled by a wall switch, remote, app, or automation system.
Yes. Self-adhesive PDLC film is designed for retrofit application to any existing flat glass surface — windows, partitions, shower doors, storefronts, and more. No glass replacement required.
PDLC film consumes approximately 3–5 watts per square meter in its powered (transparent) state. It uses zero electricity when in the private/opaque state since no voltage is required to maintain opacity.
Yes. PDLC film is rated for wet and high-humidity environments when properly installed with sealed edges and appropriate low-voltage transformer placement per safety codes.
Absolutely. When in the opaque state, PDLC glass provides an excellent rear-projection surface. When activated (clear), it becomes a transparent window again — making it perfect for retail displays, lobby features, and presentations.
PDLC film can be custom manufactured in virtually any size. Standard rolls are available, and large-format panels can be fabricated for floor-to-ceiling glass walls up to 10 feet tall by any length.
